2024 GLE450 and AMG53 comparison

How do the 450 and 53 compare as far as ride quality? Is there more maintenance on the 53? Is the insurance much more expensive on the 53?
Is the 53 more fun to drive?

2023 GLE63S - Edition 55
I had a GLE450 for three years and loved it, however, the 53 is a very different animal. I test drove many of them and had one on order before stumbling into an amazing deal on a 63s. From the research I did, if you stick with the basic brakes and not the AMG upgraded option, the maintenance is similar. I was also surprised that my insurance on the 63s was only slightly more than the 450, I has expecting a huge increase. The 53 is much faster off the line, it pulls hard and the exhaust sound is also quite pleasing. I found the ride quality similar in comfort mode but putting the 53 in Sport+ will tighten up the suspension so you will loose the cushy in exchange for sporty. Good luck with your purchase decision!

I would add that the GLE 450 in Sport Mode is comparable to the 53 in Comfort. I ran my 450 in I mode with suspension in S to get rid of the “boaty” suspension feel. My drive includes too many traffic calming berms that accentuate soft suspension. The 53 is more sporty without being harsh. Mileage is not as good with the 53 but acceptable…driving style is a factor. Passing speed is obviously better with the 53. The throttle is linear and it pulls hard at passing speeds and beyond.

I currently own a 24 GLE 53 and previously owned a 20 GLE 580 and a 21 GLC 43 Coupe. The GLE 53 is a dream come true b/c both previous Benz’s were horrible re start/stop and shifting from 2nd to 1st when stopping. Passengers in both previous MB’s would ask what’s wrong with this car, its jerks so much when stopping. Not so with the 53. I think AMG finally got it right. She drives/shifts so smoothly and responds so quickly when asked, no matter what drive mode it is in. (And I love the high pitched whrrr of the supercharger. )

Only complaint is diminished pops and bangs when upshifting. The 21 GLC 43 was much more vocal when upshifting. The 53 exhaust is a bit noisy at startup, even w/o engaging “excite” or whatever it’s called. But I do like the AMG performance exhaust drone while cruising. And the AMG drive buttons on the steering wheel are super cool. Also, the GLE is a bit tipsy compared to the GLC, as expected given differences in overall size and tires (GLE’s AW vs GLC’s hockey pucks. )

Sometimes I wish I had gotten the GLE 53 Coupe but then I would have lost rationale told to the wife for upgrade to get more hauling capacity. Oh, SO’s are so expensive! (But worth it!)

2024 AMG GLE53
I was only able to test drive a GLE350 at the time. But I knew I was going to go with a 6 cyl. vs. a 4 cyl. as I felt the 4 cyl. was under powered for the size of the vehicle. When I started to run the numbers, saw that what I spec'd was nearly the same as a 53...I ordered a '24 GLE53 (SUV). I've have had it for a little over two weeks and I am extremely happy with the decision.

For the break in I had to stay in Comfort mode, and was averaging 26-28 MPG. Now granted during that time, no fun exhaust and take off's, but it wasn't a slouch either and pleasant to drive as well. Now that I'm over 1K miles I'm having fun in Sport+ . It just puts a smile on my face every time.

So I can choose to be "practical" or have some fun when I'm out and about. I think that's just perfect. (IMO)

As far as insurance, when I initially inquired about the GLE450, I was told expect about "X" more, and that's what it came in at even though I got the 53.

Is the microfiber steering wheel standard on the 53 and is it hard to keep clean?
also is everyone getting decent mileage in the 53?

It was standard but I think you can order leather now. Mine cleaned easy but at about six months there was some gray showing on the rag. Don’t know if it was dirt or color leaching. I used Scotch Gard heavily when new but doubt that made any difference. I liked the lack of the hot/cold wheel and better grip. The downside for me was getting used to the larger diameter from microfiber vs leather.
