I like the screens in the GLE as it's a good balance of tech with buttons. To me the hyperscreen is just pure crap. I bet the young engineers at MB must have thought it was so cool and hi tech and it was for about the first five minutes. It's also definitely a safety concern for sure. I would despise having to hunt and peck on that petri dish of an abomination. I also do not like the new capacitive touch steering wheel controls. Guess these guys never heard of "If it ain't broke don't fix it." In the end I guess they have to justify their jobs and show supposed progress. Sometimes I think they change things just to change things. Just my opinion.

Read this the other day and it's about time, IMO. Not going far enough, though. They should add climate control, seat heating, drive modes, basically anything a driver is likely to operate while driving. Infrequently used settings are fine if they are behind a screen. I still can't fathom that regulators let it come this far while at the same time cracking down on using one's phone while driving, but being distracted by a touchscreen you have to look at in order to tap in the right place, that's apparently ok.

I echo @benzbell . The 2019/2020 era cars got it right. They have the screen yet kept the physical controls for the most used functions. Love the AMG Drive Unit for example to control the drive modes from the steering wheel. Most everything else I can actually control w/o ever taking my hands off the steering wheel. Occasionally I reach down to the center console to use a more infrequently used setting, which still has a physical button, though. Yes, it's easier to control CarPlay and Android Auto via a touchscreen, but that just highlights that those UIs are distracting as well. Even though they were dumbed down to be used while driving, they are still distracting.

Bravo!
Should happen sooner in my opinion.

I think the pre-facelift GLE is perfect as there are also actual buttons on the steering wheel. I despise the capacitive trend going on now.

Sadly it is just "turn signals, hazard lights, horn, windscreen wipers, and emergency call" which only Telsa I believe is guilty of MB isn't guilty of the aforementioned functions. I wish they include climate control. volume, etc.

They also need to define "button" as something that isn't capacitive. You need to be able to feel to find the right button and not activate everything you're touching along the way.

Amen to the above. Distracted driving...we DONT need or want more when the eyes should be on the increasingly more stupid idiots on the road.

As for capacitative "buttons" will those work well in a low humidity, high static conditions like winter time when you need to be constantly adjusting the climate controls?

There used to be a real science called ergonomics that the manufacturers including MB used to tout loudly...You know like tiny dots on a particular control , different size controls for different item functions, audible feedback .immediate response to the controls..etc etc

Just wait for the next 100 car pile up on the interstate in winter that is triggered by some idiot looking at the screen and trying to figure out why the capacitative "buttons" are not responding....you can BET MB isnt gonna take the blame for the distracted driving caused by the terrible design.....you can bet there will be a huge lawsuit over it though...

end rant....throws popcorn out to peanut gallery...
