I recently picked up a CPO 2022 GLE 450 (M256) and I’m planning to handle most routine maintenance myself (engine oil, fluids including transmission service, spark plugs, etc.). I’d like to buy a diagnostic tool that’s a good match for this chassis and can do more than just generic OBD.
What I’m hoping to do:
- Read/clear stored + pending codes across all modules (not just powertrain)
- View live data / freeze frame where available
- Run common service functions (reset service interval, electronic parking brake service mode, battery registration / adaptations if needed, etc.)
- Ideally access Mercedes-specific data like “actual values,” basic adaptations, and guided tests (if realistic outside dealer tools)
Questions:
1) What tools are you all using successfully on V167/M256?
2) Any “don’t waste your money” options that don’t actually reach the MB modules on newer chassis?
3) If you had to buy one setup today (hardware + software), what would you choose and why?
Budget-wise I’m flexible - I’d rather buy once/cry once than end up with something that only does generic OBD-II.

If you have enough time to do the job step by step reading very simple instruction doubled with pictures and schematics, you can buy a 15$ Openport Interface and you can pay 40-50$ for Xentry Diagnostic PT from any seller. Rest is folklore.Originally Posted by notlimahrelyt

I just did AMG skins for Cluster, Performance variants and Facelift Headlight's on a non-Facelift w167 with all functions active with Aliexpress Openport.
Here on forum, you can find a lot of detailed tutorials about using j2534 pass-thru interface if you can filter the banned leachers that tells that the tutorials is not good after they listed on their websites.
Also you can use professional service from our sponsors like @EleBest or @rjautomotive
