Playing Blu-ray DVDs
I'm looking at a new W166 GLE but I keep finding reasons NOT to upgrade as it's not alot different to my W166 2013 ML.
For example, I always knew my ML doesn't play Blu-ray DVDs (it says disc unreadable) but pretty disappointed to recently discover the other half's relatively new W205 C250 won't play Blu-ray DVDs either, even though it has the latest COMAND unit with the tablet style screen poking out of the dash.
So now I wonder if the new GLE-Class plays Bluray DVDs, either through the dash CD/DVD slot, or through the rear DVD player if you have Rear Entertainment System? And how about a HDMI input too?
Thanks guys, any information would be sincerely appreciated!

i don't know for sure but am very certain it won't play blu rays. you would need an HD screen to view it which the screen likely is not. Car manufacturers don't care about their cars playing blu rays since no one except you really cares to view a blu ray on such a tiny screen. its a waste of time and resources.

Thanks for your input. It definitely does not play Blurays. I do have the optional TV tuner though, and I can view TV channels in HD so it appears the screen is already high-definition.
This is just silly on MB's behalf (I have no idea what other manufacturers are doing though) as who buys DVDs anymore? Just about every new release movie or series is on Bluray these days, and if it's available that's all I buy. Quite dissapointing that it doesn't work on a car that's just over 3 years old, not to mention our even newer C250 that's not even 2 years old yet. Bluray technology has been around for many years now.
My neice has just bought a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee with all the bells & whistles. The rear seat entertainment system is exactly the same as mine (not sure if it plays Blurays though) but it also has a HDMI input slot just above the other RCA inputs (red & white for video & yellow for audio) so at least you can plug in an external device and play anything in high-definition.
Rear Seat Entertainment is a $2,300 option on a new GLE here in Australia, but it's not even the latest technology. Catch up with the times Mercedes-Benz!
Cheers, and thanks again for your information.
