I just took delivery on my new GLE350 4matic and absolutely love it! Can anyone tell me if there is a way to display the direction of travel (compass heading) in the small display area between the guages or on the mirror? Or is it necessary to turn on the nav system to see it on the screen? Thanks.

You do not have it in the mirror.
If I am not mistaken, I think you can set the compass to be always present on the command screen.
