GLE 300d vs. Lexus GX

Hello. I am considering purchasing either the diesel GLE or the Lexus GX. Residual/resale price is my question as I tend to not keep a vehicle over 3-5 years. Does anyone know how the two compare? Or any advice in general?

Also, any experience/thoughts regarding the Mercedes diesel?

Thanks in advance.

Cannot comment on lexus GX.

I've had 3 diesels, E, ML, and GL. All of them were great cars. No issues with the ML or GL. Had to replace the glow plugs in the E under warranty. We sold the ML after approximately 4 years. Kept the GL for about 3 years. The E we kept for about 4 years. Solid performers that gave me great MPG and resale when I sold them. Diesels tend to hold their value better than gasoline models.

Lexus will have a better resale value. If you want even better resale than that, check out the 4runner. German cars tend to have poor resale in general.

I love MB's V6 diesel but the GLE is only avail with 4cyl now. I hear good things about the 4cyl however but it doesn't compare to the performance of the V6.

The GLE will require less trips to the gas station than the GX because is a V8.

Maybe leasing might be smart for you.

What is it about the GX that that puts it in your consideration? The Toyota/Lexus suv's will certainly hold their value and require minimal maintenance. I personally perfer the LX but $$$ (currently looking to get my hands on an older 100 series). And the rear door of the GX drives me up the wall. If you want the off road capability, I would consider a 4Runner or used LX570. If you're looking for the 3 rows, then a Sequoia Platinum or MB GLS are worth a look. The 4 cylinder diesel in the GLE (5 seater only) comes down to personal preference. That's the nice part about leasing, if you don't like it, not a problem as you're not tied to the car.
