GLE 350 and ML350
How many of you burn regular gas in your GLE350 (2016)

I have been using mid grade gas and it seems to work fine (89 octane) but have not gone to regular. I realize the factory recomends 91 gas but I do most of my driving around town so not really necessary to run 91. This is my third ML350 or GLE350 and no problems with mid grade at all.

TIA

I was surprised to see that the compression ration for my '14 ML350 was 12:1. That's a lot. My '67 GTO is 10.75:1. In the '70's the big engines were detuned down to 8.5:1. Now to squeeze out power from normally aspirated engines, the CR has gone back up. You can't hear knock anymore since the engine computers make adjustments to prevent it at the expense of power. Day in and day out it won't make a lot of diff to run 89. Going to 87 is something to be avoided. We don't get 91 here. Only 92 or 93. I explained to HRR (Her Royal Rudeness) that she was free to run 89, but she should pony up for 93. We'll see.

I had 15 gallons of Sta-bilized 87 in the garage that I had on standby for my generator for less than 5 months and I used it on my GLE when it was practically empty. Only thing I noticed was lack of pick up. One of highways have some real short entrances (Northern State Parkway) and we have to be able to go from 0-60 quickly to merge in. I will tell you this...it was not pleasant when I stomped the gas and the GLE went 0-60 in 2 hrs (sarcasm). HUGE overdrive lag and sluggish acceleration. Other than that,..it ran fine. Next I make sure I have at least half a tank of 93 and see if there's a difference.

A gaggle of MB's
Yes - lower MPG and lower "power" as octane drops.

My personal guideline betw Prem and Mid - about 50% of the cost savings will be lost in lower economy... my area $.20 gal different - lose 50% making it $.10 cent "savings" per gal - 20 gal fillup means to me my real savings is $2.00 that stop.

If Prem and Mid were $1 difference = 20 gal fill x $.50 = $10 savings.

That's my 2 cents...

I'm sure the engine management system pulls timing with lower octane gas based on the feedback from the control sensors. Loss of power will result with lower octane gas.
