Do I need snow chains?
Thank You in advance !
I live a little over an hour away from Tahoe and with 4 wheel drive, I have never really had the need to install chains going to Tahoe. Mainly because I've never gone when there is a snow storm. Driven in snowing conditions, yes - but never when there has been the requirement to put chains on. Cal Trans does a good job of clearing Hwy 80 and since they have recently performed road improvements, Hwy 80 is the way to go.
Hwy 50 is a more tercherous route.
The ice that you can't see is what is the most dangerous thing on the highways to Tahoe. If you drive in the early mornings or late afternoon when the sun is not out, the temperatures allow for ice to form..
Every year, I hear about people getting stuck and stranded driving there 4x4 truck somewhere in the snow in the Tahoe area.
Best words of advice are to be prepared. There are lots of things to prepare for in cold, snowy conditions.
