Dealer preparation fees?

In the US, how much have buyers found dealer preparation fees to be for GLE SUVs and have you been able to negotiate not paying them? I don't know what this item is (washing the cars and adding any dealer-installed options)? Advertising fees? Why should buyers have to pay for this?

A gaggle of MB's
In the "normal" case - car dealers charge a "handling fee" - almost all the MB dealers I know do not charge a dealer preparation fee, etc..

shipping is usually in the price and on the window sticker and you can see in kbb or edmonds. winds up part of the msrp that you negotiate off. never had a prep fee from any purchase anywhere. EVERYBODY adds some fixed amount on the actual invoice as "doc fee" etc. All preprinted on the actual invoice you get. $ are varied. this purchase at MB was just under $400. i think the subaru was 200 or 300. good luck, ron

When I bought my CPO I asked up front what the "fees" were. what the tax rate was, registration and anything else. When I started the negos I was looking at the "all in"cost. The dealer had prevalued my trade. We went back and forth over the net difference till we got to an "out the door" price. You can easily start with all the fees. How the dealer apportions their profit has no effect on the outcome.
