Jolting GLE towing caravan

We have a late 2016 GLE 350d which has been magnificent to drive and tow our 2.3 tonne dual axle caravan until last week when we hitched up the van and proceeded on our way for a short break. Within 50 km, the GLE went into a jolting gait on a smooth bitumen road around the 70-80 kph mark. It was just like driving on an undulating road surface. Upping the speed smoothed out jolting but it was so disconcerting that we abandoned our caravan trip and proceeded without the van. However, at certain speeds, around the 100 kph, a slight jolting could be felt intermittently over our 900 km journey. Has anyone else experienced this and any ideas what could cause such a ride? We will be going back to the dealer next week but wanted to check with forum members as to their thoughts and go to the dealer armed with any information on a possible cause.

Sounds like the wheels need balancing, probably on the caravan if you don't have the issue driving the GLE alone.

+1, sounds like problem with wheels/tyres, the fact that the problem appears at a certain specific speed proves it as well.

Thanks for your suggestion but wheel balance is OK. The jolting is not sideways but vertical, as if the wheel/tyres were out of round but this would be evident all the time, irrespective of driving with or within the caravan. One suggestion received has been a towing code in the computer gone awry and needing resetting. Hopefully it is as simple as this.

Tongue weight on SUV trailer hitch or trailer tire balance (not SUV tires)?
