Not surprisingly, I received no responses from the ML forum, so I will try here.... have a 2013 ML550 with 38k miles -
I will be taking it in soon for the 40k maintenance. Although they are not currently leaking, should I have the camshaft end caps replaced as preventive maintenance? I have read in these forums that the original ones are problematic. I bought the parts but it looks like swapping them out is beyond my capability. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance.

Cant help but notice you had a ML550. This must be an issue or concern with V8 engines. I have always wanted a ML550 but have not heard of this issue. Good luck

I have heard that the camshaft end caps can be a source of frequent leaks, so although mine aren’t leaking I was thinking of changing them but not sure I should do anything. For what it’s worth I love the engine overall. Great response and ride from the 550.

I don't have any 550 specific experience, but for a mechanics perspective, I would say if it's not leaking yet then just wait. That's going to be a bunch of labor by the sounds of it, no sense spending money to fix something that isn't broken. Also, if it they ARE a frequent issue, replacing these end caps that aren't leaking now means you'll just be replacing these new ones that much sooner as well. Unless there was some other work going on in that area of the engine making the end caps easier to access, I personally would just leave it be for now.
