2016 GLE 350D AMG Line PREM
Question Comand online map updates

Hi,

I have just returned to MB after a spell at Lexus and then Range Rover. I bought a 2016 GLE 350D AMG Line with Premium + and am just getting to grips with it all.

I can see that my map version is 2015/2016 V4 Europe and know that this will be just outside the three years of updates which it seems the previous owner didn't take advantage of. How do I go about updating this and roughly what is the cost? Does it have to be at a dealer?

Thanks

Yes, only the dealer can do this. I believe the cost is somewhere in the range of $200-$300. I have no intention of updating once my three years is up. I use Waze, via Android Auto, exclusively. I wouldn't waste money on this, unless you use navigation a lot and you're frequently finding the map database incorrect. Think about this for a minute. MB comes out with updates yearly, yet new roads are being built daily. Therefore, their updates are already obsolete as soon as they're installed. I actually paid for an update with my last vehicle, only because I was moving to a new state and wanted to be sure I could find my way around. Immediately after getting the update, I still noticed roads missing. I would be driving on a highway and the map would indicate I wasn't even on a road. This is proof of my previous point.

If you insist on updating, try this link. I have no experience with them, so I can't verify how reliable this is. However, it appears to be a less expensive alternative.

Price I was just quoted 2 weeks ago for NAV update in my W212 E-Class - "The regular price is $249 plus a $65 install fee"

One other thought, as I was able to get the 3rd update as part of my CPO 2016 GLE 350 purchase. Updates may not be necessary for those, like myself with Apple CarPlay. Current maps are used when connected and iOS13 has made important updates that are useful. Check with an Apple iPhone user if you're looking to solve navigation update costs and could consider an iPhone.
The phone integration is problem free and nobody can tell I'm on a hands-free call as well.

my dealer in sarasota has specials where they do $99 map updates occasionally, we do those.... yes the phone is more accurate but the command is bigger and we are old aka bigger text/picture is better and frankly i love my wife but she is a lousy navigator... when is the next turn ? huh ? oh yeah .... uummmm about a mile back ? uhuh....

although this last trip we do bring up waze on her phone and it works... but again i ask which way ? she points left and says right... not worth the arguments

With the Apple CarPlay option, plugging into the CarPlay USB port uses the GLE's 8" navigation screen. Pictured on mine, I have Apple maps and Google maps which stay up to date so it's the best of both worlds- up-to-date maps and large screen navigation.

It sounded like from another post or two that the phone screen would be the one used, so I wanted to clarify that for anyone not familiar with using the Apple CarPlay. I'm enjoying Apple CarPlay and also having a huge iTunes music library available making up for not subscribing to Sirius XM for commercial free music!

My 2016 isn't one of the early models and came with the CarPlay option. I wish they made it easier to get to the USB ports, and the cable kind of gets in the way of the armrest covers at times, but it's a really handy feature to me. It's probably one of those features that can't be retrofitted, but if were an option to someone I'd suggest it.
