Non-uniform tread wear middle vs outer tread Conti Cross Contact
After 20k miles looks like I am getting more outer (shoulder) tread wear than middle treads are wearing. Is this normal? Would increasing air pressure make the wear more uniform? I’m not against the potential penalty in ride quality if it evens out the wear and could also improve fuel economy.
I am getting 1/32” more wear on inner and outer shoulder treads compared with the inners. This is over a 20k mile usage with rotation every 10k miles. Tires have been rotated twice. I am a conservative/mild driver, ie no hard cornering and no wheelspin.

I added 5 psi to bring the pressure to 45psi. I'm sure the ride quality change will be noticeable. I'm aiming for max tire life. At this rate, the Cross Contacts look like they will last around 35k miles. Far short of my expectations of 50k miles per set on Eagle LS2s on a Touareg. The factory LS2s got 60k miles. Replacements achieved around 50k.

Wearing on the shoulder(s) indicates underinflation.
You will see the MB-recommended pressures on the gas cap. Always make sure you set your tire pressures while the tires are cold.

Replaced my OEM Continentals this spring and got 45,846 kms / 28487 miles out of them. Kept the pressures in the middle of the recommended range. Had uneven wear and did an alignment as soon as I got new tires installed, something I am going to do once a year from now on. So nice to have new quiet tires again!

Good data point 2012MLBlue. I aired up to 45psi all around. Ride didn't change much. Hoping to get 40k miles out of them, should come close. The tires aren't terribly noisy at the moment. The Eagle LS2s I have had in the past got pretty noisy with around 50% tread life left.
