Rear Hatch Closing from Driver's Door

Hello,
Fairly new to me 2016 GLE 300d. I haven't really been driving much during the pandemic and bought it at the beginning of it. I seem to remember that the switch for opening/closing the hatch on the driver's door by your left knee worked by holding it up for a second which would activate the lift-gate to open, and likewise, holding it down for a second would get it to close. While opening I can let go of the button and the hatch opens. During closing, I remembered being able to let go and having it close but can't say with certainty if that is the case as is on my older ML. Recently, I helped a friend pick something up and to close the hatch he started to manually push down on it. I told him to stop and closed it with the driver's door button. Now when I go to close the hatch from the inside, I have to hold the down button the entire time until the door is sealed shut. Pressing the red button on the rear hatch itself closes it without a problem as does using the button on the key. Is this normal for the GLE or should I be able to hold down the button on the driver's door and after the hatch starts moving release the button and have it continue to close. Now if I let go the hatch freezes in position mid travel. Also, I've noticed I can raise the hatch with the car off, but in order to close from the drivers door I have to at least put the car in ACC mode by hitting the start button without having my foot on the brake. If this isn't normal, can someone please tell me how to re-set it so that it works as it should? Thank you!

On my GLC the button functions exactly as you describe and this is normal.

Thanks for the help! Had me worried, but glad to hear the operation has just changed from the ML. I like the old way more but as long as it's not acting incorrectly I won't worry about it anymore.
