2018 Mercedes GLE350 4matic
Suspension Gle W166

Hello, I drive a 2018 Mercedes gle 350 4matic with the 20 inch rims. My car has around 33 thousand mile, and I drive in NJ, where the roads are really bad. I’ve noticed that when I drive on rough pavement my car feels very rough and it bounces a lot. I’m wondering if the suspension is shot, I don’t see no leaks from the shocks though. I’ve been in a few gle loaners with the 19 inch rims and they handle bumps much better. I don’t think the 20 inch vs the 19 inch should be a big difference on steel suspension, so I think my suspension got worse. What parts usually fail in the suspension? Maybe I just gotta replace some bushings in the arms or the shocks? Also, my tire pressure around 35 psi cold. If I add any more psi it feels super harsh.

I have the same vehicle and wheels. The ride is harsh, it's the nature of the beast with 45 aspect ratio tires. Shocks are the main wear item on the suspension. 33k miles is very early for shocks to fail, but it could happen. Roads everywhere are poor, so I wouldn't chalk it up to NJ. Avoid potholes. Easier said than done, I realize. I run 50psi cold on all four tires to maximize tire life and fuel economy. The ride is not noticeably different than at 35psi, but tire wear increases and is uneven at the lower pressure.

I have 2015 ML350 and it has always had a bouncy ride It currently has 70,000 miles and does ride a little rougher though . I have always run 38 lbs of air in the tires and have had excellent tire wear. I think I got about 40,000 miles on the first set of tires. One option would be to replace the shocks with Bilstein gas shocks. There are posts on this site about them. they have a standard and a heavy duty. They would definitely tighten up suspension ie less bounce.

But I agree with Chassis, your car's low milea , most likely eliminates having a worn suspension. You did not mention how many miles are on your tires. New tires always make the ride better. 2o inch tires do ride rougher than 19. (mine has 19 inch tires) One option when you buy new tires is to maybe go to a more narrower tire, ie go from 45 to 50 aspect.

Summing up what I would do, 1. run 38 lbs of air, 2. if it need tires put a higher profile tire , 3. if not put new shocks but I think 1 or 2 will help with the problem.
