I can't recall where, but I was certain I made a note that without airmatic suspension, it also has been located under the front passenger seat with the main battery.

Absolutely not. Never seen anything remotely pointing to it. Only the main battery under front passenger seat. Aux battery only at rear below right tail light or under second row left seat.

I just confirmed with part dept the second picture is correct location.

Thanks. It seems to be non-VIN specific which is even better. Most importantly it confirms that W166 MLs have aux battery in the rear under the right tail lamp, while W166 GLEs have aux battery under the left rear seat.
