I've changed out the 3 cabin air filters on my 2017 SUV easily thanks to online video help...but I was wondering - is there an ENGINE air filter somewhere? Or is it one in the same? There don't seem to be any videos talking about an engine air filter change procedure.

Yes there is a separate engine air filter. Replacement interval is 50k miles. It's inside the long black box on the passenger side of your engine assuming this isn't a diesel.

Consider spending ca $20 on filter minder gauge who will tell you when filter actually needs replacement.
That can not only safe you money on keeping good filters, who would be disposed on mileage bases, but also will prevent low performance due the filter clog prematurely

Thanks for the video link - I found that one in a search but didn't think it was right because it was an older ML...but apparently it's similar or same! On that video - It looked like the dealer charged them and didn't do the work previously.
I sure miss the days of - remove the wingnut and cover - replace the filter! It doesn't look difficult but falls squarely into the PITA category, especially for something so basic.

The OM642 engine mounted int sedan or SUV is PACKED.
That is why some applications have 2 air filters stuffed between the block and inner fenders, with not enough room to stick fingers there.
I have that engine in Sprinter, where single air filter box pops up in 30 seconds, than you have to remove some screws around to remove the top.
