Park pilot never works

Wife has been driving her car for almost 5 years, she has yet to do a auto parking with park pilot, I tried the other day, it’s really hard to find a parking lot, it can only pick up a nonexistent lot and it you kick start auto parking, it’s impossible to park the car in a proper position. So the radar might had been misaligned from day one, but she did not bring it back to the dealer within the past few years. Besides paying hundreds or thousands for dealer to align the radars, is there any other options? Possible DIY? Thanks,

It doesn't use radars. It uses the ultrasonic parking sensors. If they work otherwise when you park, then there's nothing to align. You have an older generation system of the parking pilot, which can only parallel park. The spot needs to be directly next to a low obstacle such as a low curb and there needs to be a car behind and in front of the spot you want to park in. Basically it can only park between other cars and as said, only parallel. The newer generation system in later model years can also park perpendicular in reverse or forward. It's still mostly a gimmick, but the later generation works better. Read the chapter in your owner's manual if you wanna use it. There are several things you need to be aware of. For example by default it only scans the passenger side of the road for parking spots. You have to turn on the left blinker for it to scan the driver side of the road. This is also much better with the later generation. It always scans both sides and you get a visual of the parking spots it detects in the center display and whether they are parallel or perpendicular as shown below and then you select the exact spot you wanna park in.

Also, here are a couple of videos demonstrating the old and the new parking pilot. The first video is the old system, which is what you should have, and the second one is the new system.

Are you sure your vehicle has the parking system? Please post your VIN.

Mine works every time. It takes a while to know how close to drive to adjacent cars before indicator arrow turns on indicating the system is active.

I think I have the older one and the only time i've gotten it to work was in a trader joes parking lot to back up into a perpendicular parking spot. Never got the parallel to work nor the perpendicular to work ever again lol .I have gotten the parallel option to come on with the arrow at a stop light plenty of times though.
