2011 Mercedes E350 4MATIC
Gear shift issue

Hey All,

I have a 2018 GLE 350 that’s running into a weird issue that atleast I’ve never experienced on any of my cars. Issue started happening couple days ago, basically the gear stalk is not engaging the car into drive or reverse. When you engage it, goes
right back to park. I’m attaching a small video clip as well to explain what’s going on.

Has anyone ran into a similar issue or know what might be the problem?

So per a local mechanic’s advice, I left the car running for 45 minutes and it finally let me change the gears. I was able to drive it to the shop for him to check it out.

Leaning towards the aux battery per the symptoms but let’s see what it comes to. I know the other thread said aux battery has nothing to to do with shifting gears, however the fact that after running the engine idle for sometime it worked makes me think may be it is the battery? Could be that aux battery wasn’t charged enough and it get charged after the engine was running for 45 minutes?

Once I reached the shop, I turned off the engine and restarted the car, the problem appeared again.

I can't add much as far as troubleshooting, but in the WIS for the later W166 vehicles the "aux" battery is called the "Park Pawl Battery". Maybe that's a clue? :-)

Aux battery and main battery replacement. Then go from there.

Park pawl battery? That is very interesting to hear.

Yes, certainly, the aux battery can lead to weird behaviours to the transmission.

in the past,has told me very specifically that the auxiliary battery controls the shifting in the car…

In newer cars, it also affects auto start/stop.
