Strange Oil Temperature Issue I Noticed Today...

You can see the outside temp is 107 degrees and look how low the oil temp is at 196 degrees. Normally when I'm driving around I can get the temp to 219-223 degrees which I did and on the way home it will cool down to 212 to 214 in this kind of weather which is perfectly normal. Keeping the car idling outside it will hover around 214. Today when I got home just now I was shocked it was 196 and let it idle for ten minutes and it held 196. Took it for a another drive and got it to 223 and it cooled down to 196 again on the way home. Never seen that before in this or any other AMG I've had. I will say I've noticed the cooling seems to be more efficient in this car then my other AMGs from the past. Only think that makes any sense to me with this kind of hot ambient temperature something is open more and recirculating faster with the oil to keep it cooler. Anyone notice something like this before or have any thoughts?

Upon some further digging it could possibly be in that high of an ambient temperature there is increased coolant recirculation and fan speed which in turn brings down the oil temp. I'm convinced everything is okay but want a proper explanation. Will go down and see the shop foreman tomorrow at the dealer and see what he says an report back.

I wouldn’t worry about it. I know my V8tt in my S7 used to show strange oil and coolant temps that was often counterintuitive. I had their engine self-study guide and it did have different stages of cooling with the ability to open and close certain coolant and oil valves. This would allow the engine and oil to quickly raise to operating temperatures while also managing overall engine temperatures. You can read it here: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/att...self-study.pdf

The strange temps usually happens early during a drive when the oil temp would race to operating temps then a coolant bypass valve would close that would quickly lower the temps again until the turbos brought it right back up lol.

Thanks, the diagram on page 31 of that self study was a good overview. I'm sure a fair amount of that applies to my engine. Sure are a lot of parts and moving things to break - lol. Funny, most people comment on the other side of this issue which is things running too hot. I didn't get a chance to swing by the dealer today to ask about it. However, I'll drive it in the AM when temps are around 75 tomorrow and it shouldn't do that. Yesterday was the first time I drove it in that kind of temp so that's what makes me suspect it's normal. We're in a heat wave here right now where I live just outside of Vegas.

I wish Mercedes, or someone who has access to it, would publish the self-study guide for the straight 6 and V8. These guides are made primarily for the dealerships and service departments.

I have the BMW V8 one and Audi. Audi was the most descriptive by far.

All manufacturers do this. They are most descriptive when there are big changes.
They're designed for sales and service personnel, and are usually hard to find unless somebody leaks it.
