My opinion (your welcome!) for a mix of highway and city driving - the 350 is underpowered, the 450 is fine. GLE53 transmission/engine is far smoother. GLE 580 and 63 are just overkill with twin turbo V8, do you really want to take this to the track?? Check your budget and ego, then make your choice.

IMO the trick when reading car mags, is to find a writer who values the same thing you do in cars. Dismiss the ones that don't.
If you can't find any writers for that magazine, don't read it, as you say. I have found some writers who led me to the right car on more than one occasion.
Regarding the GLE 350, I had one for a loaner during Aspen viewing season a couple of years ago, putting a little over a thousand miles at elevations from 5,000 to 12,000 ft. Two weekends and a lot of driving in and out of cities, towns, but mostly two lanes.
I was surprised at how well the engine moved the car, when you want to move with, into, or ahead of traffic - once you get past the turbo lag.
It starts to run into a lot of wind at about 85 mph, but up to there it's pretty lively.
It's definitely not as smooth as a 450 or strong as a 53, but I think it's got plenty of punch for its purpose.
It's a little course sounding, but road noise overcomes the direct injection sound at about 35 mph.
With this year's ISG, turbo lag is probably gone.
I think the 2 l four is fine for an entry level RWD-based SUV, the 450 is worth it's extra money, and so is the 53.
And yes, I take my 53 to the track. That's why I didn't get the big sunroof....
