How to exit the manual/gear/shift
How to exit the manual/gear/shift
I have a 2019 GLE43 AMG Coupe and I have it on "C" almost all the time, recently I have noticed that the car goes into the shift gear mode on its own while I am driving and I just don't know how to exit that mode. A couple of times I thought maybe I accidentally hit the shift gear on the stirring wheel but it is started to happen more frequently that I started to believe that the car goes into the manual mode on its own. Can someone please advise how I can exit that mode? For right now, since I am not familiar with how to go back to the Comfort mode, I have to go find the car somewhere, shut down the engine and just turn the car back on which automatically puts it in Comfort!!
Thank you in advance

Just long pull on either steering wheel shift paddle until you see D replace M.

22 SL63. If you come to a stop in manual, it will shift back to automatic after a slight delay. Also, in manual, the delay is longer, but if you haven’t paddle shifted in awhile, it reverts back to automatic.

this assumes you did not engage manual shift mode, in which case you need to press the “gears” button on the center console to disengage manual shift mode. [OR if you have control buttons (not to be confused with the shift paddles) on the steering wheel, press the tab of the gears button which is one of two tabs on the left side.]

If you pulled on the up shift paddle, it would shift to the highest possible gear for the revs, and go into the automatic mode.
Just the opposite for the downshift paddle, going to the lowest possible gear.
My '21 53 requires separately selecting automatic, with either the console or steering wheel button.
I fumbled around quite a while until I figured that out. 🙁

First off, it sounds like your car has a malfunction if it enters manual mode without you doing something. That shouldn't happen. Secondly, there are two manual modes. If you press one of the shift paddles on the steering wheel, it enters temporary manual mode. It stays in that mode as long as you keep shifting manually, and/or frequently change your speed. Once you cruise at constant speed for about 10 seconds and don't use the paddles anymore or come to a stop it will automatically exit the temporary manual mode. Also, while in temporary manual mode you can exit it by simply selecting D again on the gear selector stalk. That's the quickest way to exit it.
The second manual mode is the permanent manual mode. You enter permanent manual mode by pressing the M button in the center console or by configuring it in the Individual mode and the selecting the I* drive mode. You can only exit the permanent manual mode by pressing the M button again, or selecting a different driving mode. For example in my C63 I have manual mode configured in my Individual mode, so it enters the manual mode as soon as I select I* and then if I select C or any other mode again it switches back to D. But also at any point I can press the M button to switch back and forth between D and M. While in permanent manual mode, the LED on the M button should be illuminated so you know if you are in permanent manual mode or not.
If your car enters manual mode on its own, then you likely have an electrical fault somewhere. Possibly the shift paddles have a loose contact, or the switch is worn out and it thinks you pressed one of the paddles, or the M button has a loose contact, or is worn out and it thinks you pressed it. But there's no regular scenario under which it would enter manual mode on its own w/o the driver explicitly configuring or entering it.
