If im not mistaken, it has to do with the capability of the Iphone to transfer contacts. Some phones have the feature to send as Vcard or something similar and I do not think the Iphone has this capability.

Just traded my Lexus ES for the 2009 c300. Features that work are great. Too bad the electronics are so inferior. No way to export vCard with my iphone? No way to enter addresses manually? The dealer wasted my time thinking they could do it. What an archaic car!

As I mentioned above, the transfer of vCard data from my LG Verizon phone to the GLK worked perfectly. Further, in the GLK you can enter addresses manually in the Nav system.
BTW, this is the GLK forum, not the C class forum; it's a bit further 'up'. lol

FWIW I have subsequently answered my own question with some research....it IS an iPhone problem...NOT MB!
As stated above the iPhone is incapable fo exporting data via bluetooth.....all supposedly part of Steve Jobs' evil plot to conquer the world...or some such....

Jblue, the Japanese have no use for the iPhone and it has to be given away for them to want to use it at all(see link---> http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2009/0...he-iphone.html ) I like my iPhone but I would like it to be able to do what most other phones on the market are able to do....like upload my contacts. I uploaded many of my contacts last night but what a pain.

Jblue, "uploaded" isn't the correct word so "entered" would be the correct one. I did about 20 contacts and it took about 15 minutes.
Also, if I'm not mistaken, I think my MINI Clubman uploaded my contacts. Either it did or I'm able to see my iPhone contacts through my Clubbie's information screen. I will check that out when I can.

It seems Mercedes Benz has a cradle available to allow the use of the iPhone 3G's iPod, bluetooth, telephone features as well as automatically sending call lists (contacts) to the GLK's memory system.
I think you need the iPod integration kit to start...not sure.
I will contact my dealership with the part number and see if it available.

iPhone 3G contacts upload
My sister just purchased a 550 GL so, I wanted to see if the iPhone 3G could connect and upload the contacts...the iPhone 3G and MB head unit linked and uploaded contacts easily. The bluetooth directory in the iPhone showed the title "handsfree" when I clicked on "handsfree" within the iPhone it provided a list of sub-features like..."share contacts". Click on share contacts and guess what...it shared my iPhone contact list...boom.
My thought is that MB needs to do a software flash within the GLK system.
it was so simple with the 2010 GL.
Give me a break.

The way I got around this was by using my PCMCIA card.
I downloaded my contacts from my laptop onto my SD card in vcard format.
Then transferred my contacts from the SD card onto the COMMAND unit.
I can't remember the exact menu steps on the GLK, but is was pretty intuitive. This is quite annoying if you ask me. My friend has the same problem with his 06 S class but his wife's 09 GL has no problems with the iPhone... Go figure

Finally order it online.
Now I know this can be done.
Thanks.

I finally broke down and purchased the "official" card from my Benz dealer since I don't have the time to deal with Ebay.
Good luck!

I got my PCMCIA card reader today.
I than exported a bunch of contact info from MS Outlook (in vCard format) onto a SD card.
Took it out to the car uploaded the info without a problem.
A lot of work to load the contact info to the car but i'm glad it worked.
