Chrome tape on roof rails?

Some of us (for one reason or another) did not get aluminum roof rails. I was thinking to get the same effect by applying automotive chrome tape to the rails.

Anybody here have any experience on automotive chrome tape? Is the tape tough enough to withstand the elements, and easy to remove afterwards? Does it contour easily?

Thanks in advance

I'd be reluctant to put chrome tape on my new mercedes :-\. Are the roof rails metal or a matte finish plastic? If they're plastic I would just use tire shine on them. This would be a non-permanent way to spruce up the look

The mounts and both ends are plastic, the rails itself are metal, matte finish
