tire chain and autosock
Anyone tried the autosock in lieu of tire chains? It appears to be easier to put on and take off and is endorsed by some big name auto makers.

When the links on a manufacturer's page merely point to locations which reprint the company press releases and not actual user reviews, I'm always skeptical.
But I note that users on Amazon gave the AutoSocks favorable reviews...as long as you comply with the under 30 mph restriction and only drive on snow/ice covered roads. Even a short stretch on dry pavement results in them being ruined.
Since it's not always possible to avoid driving for short distances on dry patches of pavement during winter conditions, I'd consider AutoSocks to be an emergency measure only, not a substitute for chains in areas where they are required and/or truly needed.
But first I'd invest in winter tires (not to be confused with all-season tires).
