GLK driving impression

hi all,
i just got GLK rental today when we took our R500 in for air strut replacement. similar to the C300 rental i had last year, very impressed w/ the chassis, the drivetrain, and also the engine. bad news - isn't this a $45-50k car? the interior quality/materials - very disappointing. how do people reconcile that? Audi's and older MBs have better materials/workmanship....

Actually, it's an entry-level $34k (base price) compact SUV based on the C-Class. And buyers typically negotiate an additional 5 - 8% off that MSRP.

I'd say M-B has done a very credible job of balancing the quality of the interior with their aggressive pricing model to bring new buyers into the M-B "family."

Agreed! And to be honest, I think many people are confusing clean, simple and functional with "cheap". The GLK is a "boxier" style vehicle, a fancy moulded interior with bunched leather panels on the inside of the doors would look out of place.

I am happy with the GLK interior. Fit and finish are quite good and the panels feel sturdy. I have brushed aluminum trim and they contrast very well with the dark panels

What I don't like is the fake chrome, cheap sunvisor and lug nuts. I commend the MBTex . I hate the running board sticking out hitting your legs getting in and out.

It's a MB that starts at $34K (and there are discounts on top). For that amount of dough, I found the overall value to be excellent (big motor, RWD as opposed to FWD, supreme cruising comfort, can be hustle around corners when pushed, plenty of cargo space etc.).

Audi sets the benchmark for interior (I would know, since I had one), and that is somethin that brand focuses on. So if that is your priority, go get an Audi. But even the cheapest Q5 would run you several k's more than the cheapest GLK.
