Question GLK - Buy Locally in Canada or Import From USA

I am in the process of buying a new 2010 GLK at a local dealership here in Montreal.

However, someone has told me that I should consider importing the GLK from the United States (either on my own or through a car broker).

Has anyone had experience with this? Is it recommended or perhaps the cost savings is not worth the hassle?

I have come across these sites:

Cars Without Borders: http://www.carswithoutborders.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=284

Mercedes-Benz Canada: http://www.mercedes-benz.ca/index.cfm?ID=6871&Language=English

Registrar of Imported Vehicles: http://www.riv.ca

Any comments would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I think there is a thread on this subject.

As far as I know, you can't import a brand new vehicle from the States. It needs to be used.

Yes you can import a new car from the USA but, with the current exchange rates, I am not sure if the savings would be worth you time.

There is one caution however:
Some Manufacturers do not make their warranties transferrable to a different Country. You would still have a warranty with a caution.
I have heard instances where warranty repairs made in Canada have to be paid in full at the local Dealer and then a claim submitted to the USA. It can become an onerous and time consuming problem should warranty work become necessary.
To be on the safe side, you should check with MB Canada before beginning the process.

Keep us informed of your progress.

I think you should look into it as the savings (if possible) should be worth the hassle. However, be careful as some US GLKs are RWD instead of 4WD. If I'm not mistaken you can only get a used vehicle into Canada though. Well, used prices for GLK from the US are really great too!

If I was able to do it all over again, I would look into it for the potential savings!

I don't think it's worth the time and money to try to import an equally spec'd GLK in to Canada from the USA. If you build a loaded one on mbcanada and a similarly loaded one on mbusa you will find that their prices are really similar. Given the extra savings you can talk down at a USA dealership it won't really make a difference after the import tax and hassle. That and the mentioned exchange rate isn't so good right now. Plus you will end up with a US spec car. This is my opinion though however, I like to buy new cars locally. If it was a used car and easy to import I would try to do it as they really are that much cheaper in the States. My friend picked up a used S2000 for $7k in Texas!

if you're seriously considering...

I had looked into this matter 3 times as I hold dual citizenship.

MBUSA cannot sell the car to a "Canadian" as NEW.
You'll have to leave the car in the US for a year before bringing it over. MBUSA has made some dealers very restrictive on this and they could lose their dealership rights if they do not comply. It is not much of savings after the duty / taxes / modifications etc. Compare feature for feature and you'll get the answer.

But if you are still curious... check this out:

I say don't bother. Canadian GLK has more standard features than USDM

+1. I believe GLK is one of a few cars that have competitive price in Canada vs US price. However buying from US should be one option to consider and for some other cars you do saving $$$ (ie. MDX or Tribeca)

Tate is correct.

When you read most threads here it appears that many in States have bought their GLK for the price of an expensive mountain bike, lol.

But keep in mind that many of them don't have all the features that come in the Canadian model and packages. Also, some of guys have managed to negotiate great deals with local dealerships. Will you be going down to the States to deal directly with the dealer?

Plus, you likely won't get financing from MBUSA as a Canadian citizen with current employment in Canada... so you better be prepared to pay cash.

All to say... you have propably already wasted enough time... support your local MB dealership and buy your GLK in Canada.
