Check Engine Light

Just went over 5,000 km yesterday and the check engine came on. First think that came to my mind was that I did not put back the fuel cap properly, but I checked and it was fine. Anybody else got this issue?

How's it running? If it's okay... give it a few days to 12 days and see if the lite goes off... if it was the cap... it will turn itself off. But if the engine is not runing well, it's probably bad gas.... then you should swing by the dealer....

The car is going back to the dealership tomorrow. I already took an appointment. I want to make sure that everything is OK, since Christmas is coming, and we'll travel a lot in the upcoming weeks...

Strangest fuel cap I have run across (since the Ford GT and now the Mustang....capless....like a race car).
You don't turn it a couple of times past the clicks.
You just turn it till it hits the stop. Maybe a half turn.
It's either good or bad. Pretty hard to screw it up.

Of course the cap could be bad.

Could be anything.
If you were interested you could stop by almost any of the national parts houses (Advance/Napa/etc) and they would read the code for free. Then (I assume) we could find a listing of the codes for MB and figure out what it likely was.....

It could just as easily be a sensor somewhere that died prematurely.

Or, and this one I hate...it could be a "transient"... never to happen again......maybe.

But the absolute best thing to do is what you are doing.
Drop by the dealer and get the service you already paid for.

Maybe you need an oil top up? Or is it a different light? I haven't reached that mark yet.
Good luck hopefully it's minor or nothing at all!!

+1

Hopefully it's something minor they can actually detect...

I drove my old GTI for the last 4 years with the engine light on cause nobody could find anything wrong. They would reset the thing and two days later it would come back on...

He's the latest news on my check engine light. The dealership reset the computer Friday morning, because the problem appeared to be isolated and no defect sensor code has been recorded by the computer.
Friday afternoon, the light came on again. Called the dealership, who asked my to drop the car this morning. They told me that they will have to diagnostic the problem again and they will call me later.
The engine runs fine and everything else is functional on the vehicle.

Hi Miric, did you asked them what was the code description? I don't know if MB service center will record the code in their data bank for future reference, but I think you need this as part of service history.

Btw, Ontario already passed the law that car manufacturers have to release their previously 'dealer' only codes. Which means, if you have or find someone with the right scanner , you can get the code yourself.

Hey, it happens. Hopefully they got it. I will say that I have never seen an O2 sensor go bad without throwing a code.....

O2 sensors going bad this early points to bad or contanimated gas... there are four sensors on this engine, two up front and two aft... I bet it was one up front.... I would change gas stations... always use super, and watch out for alcohol content above 10%. Good luck

thought i'd post here instead of a new thread.... for anyone interested, electric air pump issues were the cause of my check engine light.

went in for Service A on Wednesday. On Saturday before that the check engine light came on. I stopped at a dealer I was near and code scanned it. Said it was low air intake or something at start up - cleared it - said it shouldn't be an issue. Light came on again on Monday, so they checked it out on Wednesday during the A service. Same code, cleared it - upgraded API and said it would go away. Day later, light comes on again - take it in for a 3rd time (!) - electric air pump is kaput and is getting replaced tomorrow.

sigh, i'm so not an impressed customer and owner right now and just need to rant.

the pump got replaced because that's what was generating the codes according to the techs, but 2 hrs later after driving off with the car, the light was back on. they'll pick it up from me again on monday, so that i'm "not inconvenienced any further". well, scratch that. tonight i noticed that my interior lighting is not working when i open the door, and my locator lights are not coming on when i unlock the car. all the settings are still intact and i've even reset them. wtf mercedes benz!
