Cool Brake Dust

Is anyone experiencing a lot of brake dust from the front wheels? I'm passing the 2k odometer reading and it always seems to build up. Is it a break-in thing or because of the weather (cold, wet, etc.)?

Don't get me started! It's the only (but a HUGE) blemish on an otherwise good car. Grrrr.

I have hardly any brake dust (I have 20's on it) and compared to my BMW is it positively pristine.

I get a ton of brake dust too...on par with what I got on my old 350Z.

I don't see why this is a problem though. Yea, you have to clean the wheels a lot more...but what do you expect when you throw breaks this size on the car? Not a whole lot you can do while maintaining the performance of the car.

Welcome to a German car. I hate to go with the "blanket statement" as someone always yells at me for it...but ALL German cars have the brake dust problem. There are countless threads across this board dealing with this topic and why people think it happens and how to attempt to prevent it. In the end most of us just learn to live with it and complain about it while we are trying to wash it off every other week ha ha.

Well, if you do a search on "Ceramic Brake Pads" either here or on the "other" forum you will see many testimonials to Ceramic Pads on Mercedes cars. Even AMG cars. They stop better and produce very little dust. Unfortunately they are not made for the GLK, YET. I have asked Akebono to notify me when they make GLK Ceramic pads. BTW, Akebono is located in Kentucky. I have had a great experience with their Ceramic Pads.

The break dust on the GLK is nothing compared to my other car. Guess it is all a matter of perspective. Would u really pay for ceramic breaks to get rid of the break dust on a 30K or 40K car/suv? Just clean the wheels, apply Rejex, and hose off once a week.

In fact, IIRC, I Think the owner's manual says something to the effect of needing to polish chrome and/or wheels on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

Like a previous poster stated, the GLK is far better than BMW. We recently got rid of our 3 series and its dreaded brake dust. Loving the fact that my wheels stay cleaner longer.

Thanks for the Rejex suggestion. I just ordered some and only ended paying 22.00 with shipping. I like that it helps with the bug addiction to the front bumper because I do get some highway driving in and go through gnat territory.

2010 Sandstone Beige, Premium with UMI and more tint next month.

I found Rejex works well on rims and bumpers and last about 4-6 months per application (found works better than wheel wax). Do not use it on your windshield or will get a lot of chatter. Also love Klause All In One every 6 months for whole car. And I know .

No brake dust here, but I don't put too many miles between washes and don't do much hard breaking. On a side note, that's why I got 20's - very easy to clean.

Yes, it's not a problem.

Some people are annoyed, but none of this enough to get Mercedes, BMW, etc. to fit poorer-performing brake pads. But lots of these are available from aftermarket sources. For many USA-sited Mercedes, the day the car is driven off the lot new is the day it has the best tires and brakes it will ever have.

I got my Rejex yesterday and plan to put it on as soon as it gets a little warmer. Question? Can Rejex be applied to the whole metallic area of the vehicle or just the front bumper and wheels? I read a lot of reviews on it which were favorable and some mentioned putting it on the whole vehicle including the glass and chrome.

After I got my default brake pads replaced due to squeakiness the new pads no longer give off any dust and it's super easy to clean.

You can put it on the whole car. I have found the wipers chatter with it on the windshield. I have also applied to the paint on my BMW, it gives a nice shine, but, gave the paint a plastic appearance that I did not like. I still do the bumpers and lower body work, and tail pipes with it. Very easy to put on and take off.

Stay away from ceramic pads.

Try these... 50% less dust, better stopping power: http://www.autoaccessoriesgarage.com...nz-GLK350-2010

You'll need one of these too: http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/...ek+Google+Base

Please stop crying.... They're NOT a full ceramic pad but a Kevlar pad (with "ceramic particles"). (NOT THE SAME DUDE!... no matter what you say or what they advertise to the public.) They're NOT fully ceramic for a good reason. Look closer... because they "contain ceramic particles", and are mostly Kevlar, these are not considered a true full ceramic pad. A full ceramic pad doesn't last very long... therefore I'll repeat what I said earlier... do not buy a ceramic pad.

... here's a box of Kleenex on me....

If you don't want to go ceramic, Wagner and Porterfield pads produce a LOT less dust. About 80-90% less, IMO.

Look,EBC says that the Red Stuff 3000 is a ceramic pad.
MBRedux says they don't know what they are talking about.

You pay your money and you takes your choice as to who knows what.
Here is an interesting story about EBC....
http://www.subiegal.com/productrevie...uff_review.htm

If Akebno doesn't come through pretty quick,I will order a set of these EBCs.

Karburn,I am not even aware that Porterfield makes pads for the GLK.
And be advised that even the famous R4s "carbon Kevlar" pads use ceramics.......

I think we all got a couple of years before replacing pads. When I rotated wheels, after 5k miles, they looked like new.

I guess some people want to replace theirs asap because the amount of brake dust is driving them crazy?

After I got mine swapped out I've noticed like virtually no brake dust anymore, night and day difference. Rims are no longer black after a couple weeks.

Oh for crying out loud.......... I've have a set of these RIGHT NOW on my Nissan....they advertise the word "ceramic" for all those simpletons out there in society who can't figure it out, who pretend to know stuff about cars when they really don't know sh*t about nothing.... like you! It's too complicated to call them "Kevlar" pads because that would confuse about 90% of the *want-to be car nerds* out there... when we who are in THE KNOW just laugh at morons who will not admit when they are wrong!.... like you!

A Kevlar pad is NOT a ceramic pad... pure ceramic pads suck for street use.... end of story.... you advised everyone to go out and buy ceramic pads just because they were not happy with their brake dust... that was wrong advice because pure ceramic pads are not recommended for street use.... so don't try and get out of it by hiding behind an ad.... they are NOT ceramic, they are Kevlar and you my friend are stupid to give advice on things you really have no experience with... so please stop or you may get someone killed with ceramic pads for street use.
