Montreal/Quebec Trip - What to see?

Not realated to GLK, except I'm taking GLK for road trip to Canada in September.

Staying 3-4 days in Montreal and 4 days in Quebec.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. What to see, what to do, what not to do etc. I'm doing my research, but figured there are quite a few Canadians on this site, might as well ask the locals.

Thanks in advance

Im not local there, but from my memory:

Montreal -- Notre-dame, art museum, downtown bar street...
Quebec city -- Old city, city fortress...

Should also consider Ottawa which is only 3-4 hours from Montreal.

I was thinking Ottawa, but I think it'll be another time. It's kinda out of the way for me as I'm taking 87 from NY.

I was just in Quebec City in June. Definitely drive out to see Montmorency Falls and Il d'Orleans. It's a day trip only 15 minutes outside the city. The falls are on the way to the vacation island of Il d'Orleans, which has beautiful european-style homes/cottages and views of the St. Lawrence river. It takes about 2 hrs to drive around the whole island and take photos. I don't recommend Hotel Pur, which bills itself as a chic hotel where celebrities stay and charges accordingly. It's really a slightly redone Days Inn (i.e., painting the wallpaper as part of the remodeling job), and not close enough to the Old City. If you want to splurge a little, stay at the Hotel Dominion, which is in the old city, and near an excellent restaurant, Restaurant Initiale (pricey, but excellent service and a beautiful restaurant). If you like taking pictures, bring a tripod because the nightviews of the old city are pretty, especially with the buildings lit up in different colors.

excellent...thanks.

I'm staying in Fairmont Elizabeth in Montreal, Fairmont La Chateau in Quebec, and some hotel outside of quebec on a lake.

Thanks for restaurnt tips, I need to figure that part out.

Also I still need to figure out if I want to stop again in Montreal on the way back or stay somewhere outside of it.

Been to Quebect city many times, Montreal as well over the years...
Will be in Montreal in 2 weeks for the Rogers Cup Tennis so planning my tourist stuff as well...
Since you are staying at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth see if it's not too late to get the John Lennon/Yoko Ono Suite 1742, where the song Give Peace a Chance was written and recorded - or just have your own "bed in".
Also... Downtown Montreal - rue St. Catherine (shopping) N on Mansfield from the hotel - hang a left on St Catherine, walk 6 blocks to rue Crescent (best bars/dining), try to get over to Mount Royal for the views - Olympic Park - a bit of a hike from the Fairmont - 76 Olympics - Stadium - stuff to do there - watch for falling concrete... Old Montreal/Old Port of Montreal - Lotsa history - Le Menara restaurant Morocco cuisine http://www.lamenara.com/

Quebec City - Since you are staying at the Chateau Frontenac you are in the best location to see just about everything related to Old Quebec - endless restaurants, shopping and stuff to do - be sure to take the funicular (elevator) from the statue of Samuel de Champlain to lower Quebec - wander over to the "Plains of Abraham" and learn about how the English defeated the French in 1759 http://www.ccbn-nbc.gc.ca/_en/index.php
History on Chateau Frontenac - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teau_Frontenac - Quebec Conference in 1943 - WWII Roosevelt/Churchill making important decisions...

Let me know if you have any other questions or ideas and I'll be happy to reply

I went to montreal about 10 years ago with the fam so i am not sure if these places are still there.

1)Olympic stadium- not sure what they use it for now but the elevator ride to the top observation deck is pretty cool

2)Notre Dame basilica and St. Joseph's Oratory are beautiful

3) Biodome Montreal: great place for the nature lover, great representations of various ecosystems.

4) Casino Montreal: was too young to go at the time but the parents said it was nice.

Have a great time!
