Hey all
So this being my first luxury car, I decided to put winter tires on my GLK to protect my invesment :P.
I was wondering, would this tire ( http://www.1010tires.com/tire.asp?ti...now&pc=1712600 )
fit on these rims ( http://www.ykwmotorsports.com/EURO_MBR3.html ) ?

don't see why not, but rims are a bit wide (8 inches). Go to tirerack.com and see what specs 17 inch wheel would be given there. I think 17x7 is what you want. Plus I wouldn't spend much and winter rims, they are dirty and covered in snow for the most part anyways.

I got quoted $2100 for Pirelli Scorpin Ice & Snow 235/60/R-17 (which I will not opt out of ), and the rims mentioned above. Is this a good deal?

Yes if I buy the tires from tirerack and the rims locally, it still comes out to be about $1900 - $2000 , without mounting and balancing. With mounting and balancing, I calculated to be around $160, ($40 per wheel), which turns out to be more expensive then buying the tires locally.

You may want to consider the offset(+35). The factory wheel is at least +45
I went with the YKW Wheel MBR1 17x8(+45) with the same pirelli tire.

Are blizzacks better then the Pireillis Ice and snow?

Sorry for the nooby question, but you have a offset of +45 and they fit on the same pirelli? 35 + will fit too?

I did consider the YKW wheel you mentioned, but I am buying the rims locally and they don't have them or don't wanna order them , "currently unavailable".

I have no idea if they are better, but blizzacks were always among top winter tires. My point was that 2k is too much for winter set, unless you really want very specific set of wheels.

I've had Dunlop M3's that were awesome, but don't see those for SUVs.

My GLK has factory 20's (20x8) with about a +45 offset
A 17x8 with a +35 offset will sit 10mm further out on the vehicle.
Has nothing to do with the tire fitting the wheel.
MB says that 10mm can change handling, load on wheel bearings, etc.
Not saying it won't fit, but I don't like to give them any excuses to deny warranty.

I will consider blizzacks as yes I agree, 2k for a winter set is a hefty price, though if possible, I would like to get the Pireilli Ice and snow.
I will ask my dealership before I get my winter tires on if they will deny warranty due .

When I went to tirerack and picked the Pirelli's with a decent set of rims it came to just under $1700cdn for everything (shipping, duties, taxes, etc). (I live in Calgary).

If you choose the Blizzack ws-70, it will be almost $200cdn less.

I don't think any Canadian store or online site can beat this. I was planning to purchase the Pirelli's but am now leaning towards the ws-70 as I have read good reviews for the ws-60, so the ws-70 should be decent as well.

And also, could you link me to the rims you bought? I would like to pick up something cheaper then my above mentioned, as said by NYCGLK, winter tires shouldn't cost a lot.

It stinks that Canadians get ripped off on so many things.

From the reviews I have read, I am not so sure if the Pirelli's are any better (or much better than the Blizzaks) and that's why I am leaning on purchasing the Blizzaks to save a few dollar.

Then go to: Products -> Winter -> Shop by Vehicle
Select your vehicle, then on the "Build Your Own Package" category select "17" Packages". Select your tires then you get to select your rims.

I haven't made my purchase yet as I still can't decide between the Elbrus I02, I06, Moda MD6, MD7, or MD8 (all in the $116 to 125/rim range). :P I am thinking that it maybe wise to go with something black/darker so the brake dust won't be so noticable.

Thank you for guiding me how to check the rims as well, I'm new to using Tirerack and find their prices amazing. Now I have selected the Blizzacks ws-70 with Moda MD7s. So far still looking. True about the darker rims. Hate how there is so much brake dust. If there was minimal, I would have opted to the Elbrus I02 as I don't think you need machine style rims for the winter, but whatever I'll deal with it :P.

With the tirerack recommend those wheel. i really like the Rial Comb with 35mm offset. The Glk manual said 17" with 45mm offset should be used.So will this be a good wheel for Glk or not???????

You have to look at the width of the wheel also. Some of the wheels on tirerack are 7" and others 7.5" etc... I believe that the offset 35 or 45 will likely make little difference due to this. If you get a 7.5, the offset needs to be larger.
Glad to have this explained properly by someone else - this is just my basic understanding.

Perhaps someone from tirerack can answer the question?

i plan on getting whatever tirerack recommends for rims since i don't really care what the rim looks like because it will be dirty with salt and crap from the roads. i'll probably get the Pirelli Scorpion snow tires as i have those on my ML350 and they were great last year in the Washington DC 50 inches of snow last year. drove through a 2 foot unplowed road no problems with the ML.

I am with gsrjc here. Tirerack is suppose to be the tire experts and with the limited knowledge that I have on tires, I am just going to trust them and purchase a set of wheels from their recommended list. Just as long as the wheels are safe and helps us through the winter, I will be satisfied.

The approach for selecting a wintertire is starting with noting one's "average" roadconditions thru a winter. Some of us are driving a lot on wet roads, others on snowy - and some mostly on icy roads. There's not a wintertire which covers all conditions equally good, so they are made with trade-offs; some have reduced performance on wet roads, some better on ice and so on.

Selecting one's tires based on reviews can be a challenge, due to "the colour" of the teams conducting the tests, and limited brands tested. With regard to Blizzaks vs. the Pirellis Ice and Snow, didn't I find any, however the latter vs. two other brands:

I went with the blizacks ws70 (had them on my Forester xt, and they were good)
Along with the 17x8 sport edition st3 wheels. Did some shopping around and even with the shipping it is still abound $450 cheaper than I could find in Montreal.
