Mr. Lube

So I got my oil changed at Mr. Lube now for the second time (End of August)
My truck started misfiring last Thursday, so I took it to Mercedes and they said they would let me know whats up...

At first the thought it was going to be a bad gas or something electrical.
Then they call me yesterday saying it was a Crank Shaft regulator or something of that nature..

This morning she calls me in a panic, so obviously this cant be good for me.
Ends up being the that filter that "Warranty Approved" Mr. Lube used broke down at the top and particles of the filter went into my block and f'd everything up.

Awesome start of the morning... im heading over to Mr. Lube now with the filter in hand now. Looks like im stuck with no truck and a whole lot of headaches ahead.. Merry Christmas to me

damn....sorry to hear that...let us know how it goes and who will pick up new engine purchase and install

Storries like this make me think if it's worth spending extra 100 bux and getting it done at MB dealer, at least if they f uck up, they have to fix it and give you MB rental.

You have a good case against Mr.Boob. They MUST pay for your car repairs. Tell them to be prepared to open their wallets and pay up BIG TIME!

The Jiffy Lube chain here in the States are about the same caliber. Sub par materials and service. Sorry to hear this. Keep us updated.

Nobody in their right mind would take a Mercedes to a Mr Lube (or any other quicky shop). Do you have any idea how little knowledge or training their employees have of actual vehicle maintenance. Their typically kids under the cars. My god I wouldn't take my Ford pick-up to a place like that.

Even if they used brand name filters the fight your in for to get your $50k vehicle repaired will be painful.

Good luck settling that claim.

There is a big difference between a filter that you just screw into place and one that comes apart with "O" rings that need to be replaced and seated properly. Assuming that they replaced them at all. This may go well past small claims court. Please keep us informed.

Dude, I hope this works out for you. I live in Mississauga too and its well known in Canada to NEVER go to Mr Lube or Canadian Tire cause they mostly have highschool kids working there that will mess up your car. Let us know how things work out and good luck.

I do wonder if Mercedes will ship a new engine to Canada tho... so maybe you may need mr lube to pay for a whole new GLK.

I've had 4 cars in the last 9 years.. Explorer, 2 TL's and the GLK.. all which have gone to Mr. Lube and I've never had a problem ever.

Just got unlucky with a manufacture defect on the filter.
Spoke with Mr. Lube.. and they are looking after everything, I am waiting on the filter test results from the Manufacture in the US... They should have everything for me by monday or tuesday...

I told Benz today to start work on my engine today.
The company that made the filter is, www.luberfiner.com

Frank your comments are unneeded.. I appreciate everyone else's concern.. Dont worry Frank the claim will be settled with no issue.

I was thinking it might be filter's fault. Hope it'll work out fine. What is MB doing to the engine?

Regardless, Mr. Lube is liable if that's the product they approved for installation. The OEM filters are made by Mann in Germany: http://www.mann-hummel.com/mf_prodka...obackToPage=11

Or you could simply buy them on Amazon for 1/2 price: http://www.amazon.com/Mann-Filter-HU...2010&carId=003

Or you could spend a few bucks more and get this really well made Mobil 1 product: http://www.amazon.com/Mobil-M1C-253-...2010&carId=002 The price you'll see is for a pair.

FWIW, changing oil is not rocket science, even with MB's anachonistic filters and O-rings, and a faulty part could show up anywhere.

Keep in mind that whether the fault lies with the lube shop or the filter manufacturer the bill will be paid by one or more insurance companies.

I am sure the OP will be properly compensated.

glad things are heading in the right direction. I got a B class when my car was in the shop too and i honestly can't get my head around why anyone would spend over $30K (canadian) on that thing. Worst car i've driven in my life. Nothing about it demonstrates any of Mercedes perceived qualities.

I am with Frank Zappa on this one even though you don't like his response. Quick oil change places are for mainstream cars. You didn't have any problems before because none of the cars you listed are as "exotic" in US and even CA as MB. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that MBs are exotic but for the average high scool kid that works at these places they are. A few years back I had an older E class that a quick oil change place ruined. They forced the drain plug and tightened it the wrong way so the car slowly was leaking oil. Since they ruined the threads I had to get a new oil pan installed!!! I never took my car to any of these places ever again. They also had damaged the undercarriage cover that you have to remove to get to the drain plug!!!

Also, when it comes to today's MBs they don't even carry the appropriate type of oil spec required by MB. (Not all Mobil1 oils will do).
It's just not worth the trouble to save $20 o ce per year.

I think that you are all missing the point. In the oil contraption thread aggst1 talks about pumps while MBRedux refers to the "Old fashion way" which I also prefer but we all talk about the possibility of metal shavings in the pan or not, and look what some paper filter did to fishsriz engine. Can you imagine what metal would do. Again, fish hope it all works out for you.

That filter broke apart as a result of poor or forced installation.

I get that my point was aimed at aggst1 when he made reference to the pump vs what we believe is the correct way to drain the oil. Look what paper did to the engine. Cross over from your other post. Thats all no more no less. I'm in your corner.

^ I fully understand! My last post above was not in response to yours. Yet, with respect to it, filter disintegration is not all that uncommon. As they break apart they clog up the works causing severe engine damage. What many don't know is that above a certain rpm, (2000 most often) oil filters are bypassed anyways. At freeway speeds the oil is not being filtered. That's common on all street cars. Racers do not have filtration. The point is, if your sump is left contaminated inside the block, the crankshaft, piston pins, main bearings, rod bearings that are inside the open block along with all the things that do actually get direct oil from the pump will slowly show signs of wear because the oil is not always filtered as you drive. This is something the *angst1* probably doesn’t know… poor fella!

That's interesting point about oil bypassing filter above 2k rpm. In this case it seems idling car is beneficial.

Sorry off topic but
MBRedux, what's your take on warming car up during winter before driving vs. just driving more slowly while it's warming up? How about driving at higher rpm (say 3k rpm but not higher) instead of letting auto get down to reg. 1.5k-2k for faster warm up?
