GLK in deep snow and off paved roads in the U.P.

Hey all, I just returned from a dog-sledding trip to the far northern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The place we went was beyond paved roads. There was probably a base of a couple feet of hard packed snow and then we got another couple feet while we were there. The temperature ranged from -7 to 17 degrees. At times, in low spots along the road we had powdery snow plowed by the nose coming up over the headlights. All in all the GLK was like a TANK. Of course... we do have new blizzaks and I suspect that made a significant difference. We did about 24 hours of driving in mixed conditions from deep, deep snow to wet/icy roads. My biggest complaint would have to be that the rear window washer nozzle doesn't seem to be positioned well and did a poor job of keeping the salt/grit at bay on wet roads. We did high-center a couple times on the icy ridges between ruts on more heavily traveled (but not plowed) roads but never got stuck. The folks that run the kennel were surprised to see us appear right on time in the morning due to the weather and asked us what we drove. We are TOTALLY convinced we made the right winter vehicle choice. I have a cool shot of the car with a snow mobile parked next to it in a parking lot that I'll post when I get a chance.

Nice pictures thanks for sharing. What wheels do you have your snows mounted on?

Those are 18" MSW type12s from Tire Rack. I got the whole package from them including the TPS units for about $1400. I wanted to stay with at least 18" wheels. I think wheel size keeps the GLK from looking too much like a Forester. Just my opinion.

On a side note...I'm going to be back up in the U.P. soon and I'll try to get some video in some deeper stuff. Those pics don't do justice to how much snow we got into. There were points where we felt like we were in a winter Rally. Too cool.
