Back when I was a teen in the 1950's I hung out and worked at a two bay gas station in a small NY town. Back then gas stations did everything from oil changes to engine rebuilds. It was owned by a German fellow who was the best mechanic I've ever seen. We did a lot of VW work and a few MB's. One customer, a doctor, had a red 300 SL Gullwing coupe that he would leave with us for a week while he went to Europe. I drove it several times and what a machine. I forget how much oil it took, always Castrol, and it had to be drained in several places after you took the full belly pan off. Fun days. I think I've only seen one other one on the road since then.

There are a few here in La-La Land.
As cool as the gullwing is, I've always preferred the roadster; just a better looking car IMO.

Love this car. I also drove one back in 1977. It was a terrific machine. If he had held onto it, he would be a very rich man today.
