Engine noise at 2500 rpm
I have a new 2012 GLK 4Matic with a little over 2K miles on it so far. I'd like to pulse other owners to see if this is normal.
On the highway in 7th gear, the engine noise is very quiet and buried under the wind noise. At EXACTLY 2500 rpm the engine noise exceeds the wind noise and becomes annoyingly noticeable. Then if I run to 2600-2800 rpm the engine noise goes away.
I have come to call this the "fuel economy barrier", since if I keep it at 2400 rpm and below, I achieve the advertised 21 mpg. Running at 2600-2800 and I get mid to high teens, more like city performance.
Is this normal for the vehicle? Side effect of this is that I'm more incentivized to strictly follow speed limits, and this is also the first automobile that I've actually used the cruise control as a result.
