Considering a used 2010 GLK Class, thoughts please...

Hello - new to the forum and looking for an SUV to replace our aging Explorer. Have been a BMW owner for many years so love the German engineering but seems like the X3's of the same vintage have issues so have been looking at some used GLK Class vehicles but otherwise am completely new to the Mercedes world.

I've recently come across a a pretty nice 2010 GLK that was previously a rental for $25K. It's got 39K miles, AWD and pretty loaded and very clean for a rental. It's the burgundy red with charcoal interior which is exactly what I want color wise. It's certified used with a 12/12 warranty. We live in the mountains so will be a combination of two lane mountain road driving and freeway driving.

Also considering use Ford Escapes, Edges & Nissan Murano & Rogue but seems like the GLK is a nicer vehicle for a little more money.

I haven't read about anything detrimental about GLK reliability and seems like it will do well with our type of driving, so looking for thoughts on that first year model, things to look for, what the maintenance is like, any other thoughts or advice on the deal.

Thanks!

Cool

Welcome!
This is not a M-B CPO used car? The warranty seems rather short. The factory warranty is almost over. Get a longer warranty from M-B. The service schedule is available online from MBUSA.
Good luck.

Ps: the transmission & TORQUE converter are due for a complete fluid change at 39k. Have the seller do it or deduct the cost from your purchase.

The OP says its CPO, if the service is due (which it sounds like it is) then it must be done for the CPO program. Ask the dealer to show you the Repair Order on what they did on the car.

Better buy the extended warranty for the car if you are planning to keep it for a long time. They usually give discounts on the warranty based on the age of the car. Another $1500 or less will be a long and assuring way to cover any future repairs on the car specially if you are buying used.

From the little research I did, it looks like the 40K service runs around $700-1000 which includes tranny service, brake fluid flush, oil change and air/cabin filter changes. Looks like some folks change the oil and air filters themselves and just have them service the tranny and do the other inspections which can bring the cost down a couple hundred. I imagine the price will also vary depending on what dealer or garage you bring it to.

Service prices vary by location and shops. Best to do a quick survey in your particular location. One thing is sure: According to expert advice from members odf this forum, the transmission needs servicing today.
Just for information, is this vehicle a MB Certified Previously Owned Vehicle from an MB dealer? The CPO warranty that I have seen is generally longer. Naturally that increases the price of the vehicle.

This GLK was a rental vehicle, so not coming from a MB dealer. The rental outfit has a certified pre-owned program but it's only 12/12 and they said the balance of the factory warranty would still apply. I've done some research and the feedback has been very positive on these rental sales, especially on higher end "luxury" models from the fleet. I know they do offer 3rd party extended warranties or I should be able to extend the factory warranty from what I understand.

take caution on buying an ex-rental as you don't know how many renters mishandled the car. I think its better to have a dealer inspect the car and ask if the MB dealer is willing to sell you extended warranty on the car. Junk the 3rd party warranty as the MB warranty is way better than those.

Is there any big difference on the cost if you buy the same car (used) on a MB dealer? Are you paying cash? Check the interest rates between a new and used car on the dealer as sometimes it is better buying new.

Follow up: Shop local MB dealers for a CPO GLK. When we were waiting for our GLK to be born, I saw a pair of REALLY nice CPO GLKs on our dealer's lot. I didn't price them, but as I recall they were low mileage and came with a much longer MB warranty.
I would want to see all the service records for this GLK. My uninformed personal opinion of rentals is that they may have been "rode hard and put up wet."

I live in the SF Bay area so slightly used SUVs & Crossovers supply seems a bit tight and they tend to keep their value pretty well. MB CPOs I've found with similar mileage and AWD are $32-34K, non CPO around $28-29K. A lot of white ones, which I don't want. They said they will further discount the sale since it's a cash sale, so hoping to get it down to $23-24K (they brought it from another lot for a customer but the financing fell through, so another reason they want to move it).

Rav 4's, Edges, Escapes and Rogues same year and similar mileage are selling for $18-23K, so I think that's a pretty good price for 2010 MB. MB extended warranties that would match the CPO program seem to be just under $3K.

I looked at the car today and it's extremely clean for a rental, in, out and underneath. No dings, dents, scratches in the paint. No leaks or scrapes on the front skid plate, exhaust, etc (I've run rental cars into park stops and off curbs once or twice). Interior and engine compartment are very clean, spare was never used, floor mats, manuals and first aid kit are all there.

My buddy has two MBs so has referred me to SM at a local dealer that he raves about, so will have them do the vehicle inspection next week. They gave me the Carfax for what it's worth (clean) and still need to get a look at the maintenance records.

That all sounds very good. Put the savings in a fund for future service. Good luck! Enjoy!

Before 40k miles is even better. Check the 722.9 fluid change thread in the C 204 forum.

Your 34K asking price is at least 4K over priced...I am about to by a 2011 GLK350 certified with 10K miles for $30.5K.

2010 GLK
I don't think the price is that bad. My 2010 GLK (bought last week) has only 13K miles but didn't have the leather or lighting packages. CPO: $33K. Pet1700: I'm willing to admit I might have gotten hosed (it's my lot in life) but what features does yours have?
