Ask them to park overnight, start it up first thing in the cool morning. MBRedux, he is right on about the lifters. I had my new BMW and the GLK with the same issues.

They did that. Thats how i got them to hear the noise. Heard from dealer last night they are waiting for direction from mercedes technical assistance since mondays work of removing lifters and cam showed nothing.

I might have to agree with this diagnosis.

Similar to my Mazda3 daily driver - after sitting overnight in humid or damp cold air - it makes a sewing machine metallic noise.

Goes away once the car warms up - sometimes takes 30 mins of driving - from what I've been told it is a caused by the lock pin of the variable valve timing actuator not fully engaging or from a worn lock pin hole.

The vvt is oil actuated. it makes that noise because there is excess space in the actuator and it rattles back and forth until the oil pressure builds up enough to take up that space. thats why it happens after the engine has been shut off for awhile. a lot of the oil has drained back down into oil pan.

Key take away for me is that some thing is rattling around due to a lack of oil.

My GLK has been at dealer 2 weeks now. Mercedes TAC instructed the dealer to breakdown engine past the lifters towards the cylinder heads and pistons (right bank) in hopes to find something of concern in the cylinder wall area.

Good luck with the fix. My car has the same lifter noise i had 2 years ago again on some starts. It doen't do it all the time but once in 5 stats or so it would just make a loud tapping noise for a couple minutes... fun times

If you had a known problem (replaced lifters after 2 weeks of owning) and then the same sound started again, why didn't you return it to the dealer to fix (or)?

sorry i wasn't clear. I had a lifter replaced 2 years ago because of the noise. It's been quiet for 2 years and has recently returned. I don't really have time to visit the dealer yet as the noise only happens sometimes at startup (and the dealer's 30 min drive away). I'll just wait till it gets worse or something.

my wife bananas! :D
not sure if others said this but have you tried another dealer?

Anyways imo you should not be compromising your comfort in any way... why put up with a frustrating sound. So keep trying

My GLK had a knocking sound and it turned into a new transmission for me. 2 things to my story, 1) solved a problem under warranty before it got worse 2) i got rid of an annoying knocking sound ... there is a 3) but that involves me spending 4 days with a spanking new c350 and putting 1.2k on the car...

good luck!

For having knocking noise from the engine for few weeks took car to MB service ,after couple of days they said will taking engine out,on forth day get the news "Engine have internal damage do need replace the engine which should arrive in couple of days" Car have 30000 miles and under the warranty, but I don't understand if car built in Germany where they get new engine in 2 days ? In the same day I bring car for service I did place order for new 2014 Glk250BT which should be build sometimes in end of July and delivered to US in August, told them I do not want trade in my 2011 GLK350. Now GLK need new engine?

My GLK has the same knocking noise and it seems to be when it is idling. I can't remember which side of the engine it comes from but it is only comes from one side. you don't hear it after you drive for a while. only when it sit idling for sometimes. the knocking click-click noise (similar to a diesel engine but not as loud). Idk if this is anything dangerous to the engine or not. I assumed it was one of the valves as it opens and closes but I am not a mechanic. I hope the figure out what caused it. But definitely there are other GLKs out there with similar problem. Very embarrassing for a Benz.

I'm sure they have plenty of engines laying around in the warehouses. It's cheaper to replace the whole engine and and send yours back to germany (or whatever they do with them) than to do work on the existing one at dealer's rates.

How NICE OF YOU TO JUST COMPLAIN THEN NEVER TELL US WHAT SOLVED YOUR ISSUE! Gotta love such forum members that have an issue then dont give a damn to let us know what the solution ended up being!

Same on all forums first time posters ask or sometimes demand immediate answers and never reply back.

It could be just a troll. I've never even heard of this issue with this model.

People always do that crap. They do the same thing on medical forums too...
