2013 taillights

Just a question about the taillights.

For the 2013 model, the taillights when switched on has the two "teardrop" like design illuminated.

Within the top "teardrop", the lights for the brake and the turn signal are located.

What light is within the bottom "teardrop"?
Or is it empty?

Just very curious about this.

Rear fog? That's just a guess since my car hasn't arrived yet. If it is the rear fog, it would only light up on the driver's side.

You could go out to your car, turn on various lights and see where they light up.

FYI ... not rear fog. The rear fog is made up of 3 small (but bright) LED's in the lower left of the left side rear.

I did turn all the lights, turn on the signal and applied the brakes. The bottom portion of the taillights appear to be empty. Seems strange that it would be so.

Rear Lights

It's probably there for multiple lightings scenarios to meet the regulations for the different countries that the GLK is sold.

Back in the late eighties, Germany required that the brake lights illuminate only when the brake pedal is used vs. going from dim to bright when the brakes are applied (assuming the clearance lights are already on.) It's a little hard to explain, but the thinking was the always have the brake light portion go from dark to on to enhance safety and get the attention of following motorists. They didn't allow dim-on to on with brake application.

This didn't conflict with US laws, at that time, so it was common to use the same lights in the USA. Now that everything has its own controller and specific program, I am SPECULATING that the lighting programming is country specific.

If you know for sure, please post, as I'd be curious to know, now that it's been brought up.
