Expiring Extended CPO Warranty, should I renew?
I've maintained it to the letter of the maintenance journal, even having the last bit of automatic trans fluid drained by removing an additional plug on the torque converter at the dealer.
I am having it inspected the day my warranty expires for any problems. However, since I'm planning to keep the vehicle, I am considering an extended warranty. A 2 year / 100,000 mile warranty was quoted at $3,100 from the dealer. This is $130/month for the life of the warranty.
My biggest concern is the 722.9 transfer case. I hear horror stories, and the $3,100 is less than half of the cost of replacement.
Also, is there anything in particular that you guys would have checked during the inspection?
Thanks in advance for your help!
The question is can you afford to take the chance or tranny failing. The 3k that you will pay for warranty is a certain loss. What are the chances that you have 3k of repairs over 2 years.
Even at 50/50 chance of tranny failing exactly during those 2 years you are breaking even (probabilistically) if the tranny cost is 6k. Next question, do half of GLKs have failed tranny by 60k miles, certainly not. Last question, if the tranny does fail, do I have extra 3k to add to the 3k that I saved by not paying warranty so i can pay for the repair. I hope this helps to make your decision.
If you want to do a proper inspection take it to an indy who specializes in MBs. There is conflict of interest when dealer is doing the inspection, sells you warranty, and does the work.
