Car DVR

Hey has anyone put in a car DVR? What have you found that you like? I'm kind of put off by the cheap Chinese stuff but that's all I see out there. Any good ones?
How did you power it? Snaking a cable to the glove box or?

Very very slow
For a little while I was looking into getting a dashcam for my GLK too.
But thanks to one of the members in here, I am now using my iphone as a dashcam.
The recording quality is very good.
I'm guessing a lot of members here do own a smart phone, so why not use it as dashcam too.

I thought of that but you have to plug it into "shore power" because there's no way the battery is going to last. You also need a cradle to hold it in the right place. Lastly, it takes nice videos but it's not designed to loop so you'll constantly have to erase the file and start a new one. It's the hassle factor. I'd like to tuck a small unit in the corner of the windshield and when (if) I have my "Pearl Harbor" moment, I'll know it's been saved for posterity.

Is it a 12 volt plugin charger? I'd like a dashcam but I would want to have it hard wired with no visible wires. How does this mount?

I think they all come with the lighter plug but can be hardwired - which I think most of us would ultimately want.
Sutomo's recommendation led to some good forum info. I didn't want a replacement mirror so I ended up looking at an Ambarella chipset on that site. It comes in a really tiny unit which seems appealing from an inconspicuous mounting point of view. They seem to run around $100 to $120. It is titled "Dashcam Mini 0801 with GPS" on the page. You can search Amazon for the same using DVR Ambarella Mini 0801 and pull up the same Chinese unit by ePrance. Someone there, following my nose, recommended the Cobra CDR 810 to avoid the China headaches and it seems to be a nice unit but a bit bigger.
Another choice seems to be the Garmin GDR35 which seems nice, but a slightly larger unit than the Ambarella (everything is). It will accept a second lens plugged in for a rear view if desired. This is a nice plus. Also, you're dealing with an American company that understands support. It's closer to $200 though.
So - lots of choices in what seem to be decent units. Haven't decided. A lot of pro's and con's.

Is that what this is for, to record events during an accident?

Seems kind of gruesome to me...

Accidents, behavior of a police officer pulling you over, vandalism (to your car or someone else's in a parking lot), random crimes, and possibly just something neat like a huge bolt of lightning. Search YouTube for dashcam and you will get sucked in.

I'm taking my car in to have my speakers redone and might have them hardwire one of these in at the same time.

Yup! using my galaxy s3 and a $3 mount from ebay and it is way better than the el-cheapo dashcam.

To each his own. I think that would look clunky, and the phone does not have the ability to record over old video once the limit is reached. I would never mount a phone or GPS device in a car this nice.

I am using an app that will allow me record in number of segments and time frames. For example, I would set my phone to record 5 videos and 5 minutes each video. It also override the old ones.

Oh, so it looks outside (like a cop car) not inside (like a taxi).

OK...
