Aftermarket backup camera

I want to install aftermarket backup camera. I don't want to connect this camera to factory radio, just use external monitor ( I want to use camera when I use my trailer)
I want to install camera on license plate and run cables to the front of my car.
Anybody did that?

Yes.... I have done that! Excavated the back side of my sun visor(removed mirror) and installed a slim 7" TFT-LCD monitor.... fits like a glove! Installed a camera in the camera mount spot in the rear end. Works great! Was going to do a write up on it months ago, but haven't found the time.... not too hard for your DIY'er... pretty easy actually! Hmm, maybe I'll do a write up. Great for tight spaces, trailer hook-up!

How did you run video and power cable to the camera? I don't know how to get behind license plate, remove plastic liner from trunk door ...etc. Too bad you didn't make writ up with pictures.

The camera I purchased came with enough cable(video and power) for the length of the GLK and extra!!! You don't have to remove the headliner, just sneak the cable in behind where the side finisher meets the headliner. The back door 'inner was removed to facilitate access to install the camera. The cable was then snaked through the upper rubber tube (left side). My camera cable came with a small quick connect which allowed me to join everything at rear, and stuff it under rear headliner. Access can be had by prying headliner(rear) away from black rubber finishing trim (top rear). Power to camera was taken from left rear reverse bulb. Important NOTE: Had to add a relay as power from reverse light would 'flicker' the monitor.... Canbus power! So relay was installed and took Bat power from left rear power outlet. The whole thing took a couple of hours... outside of building in the monitor... probably would take me 1 hr to install camera and cable now! I'll see if I can do a writeup in the next couple of days....

Huh...Oh... Ok then.... I thought you were looking at putting in an aftermarket camera because you didn't have the 7" screen??? "quote.I want to install aftermarket backup camera. I don't want to connect this camera to factory radio, just use external monitor" There are several write-ups if you have the 7" radio/screen setup...
good luck
