Rubber strip above windshield came off

I was driving down the road yesterday at about 50 mph and heard a thump and a continued thumping as I drove. I stopped the car, thinking someone had thrown something at the car. No dents, nothing appeared unusual. Today I washed the car and found that the rubber strip above my windshield was half out of the track and resting on the roof. I don't go to car washes, I am surprised that this came out of the track. I will call the dealership Monday. I am concerned by the lack of seal and possible water penetration. Interested to know if anyone else has experienced this.

It's happened to me several times. I think the design of the strip causes excess wind noise in the cabin. It doesn't fit tightly between the windshield and roof, which causes the leading edge to lift up in the wind and cause drag. I have had mine replaced twice.

Very interesting, thank you. I'm still waiting for a call from my service advisor.

This strip was a major cause of wind noise for me that actually was a mystery for a long time. It would lie down and look normal when the car was stopped.
My dealer saw it as a problem so it's happened enough to them to be familiar.
It also has apparently been a noise problem for a few owners that have posted.
It can't cause water intrusion when it's loose. The glass has a large mastic seal against the frame. This is designed, ironically, to primarily smooth the transition between glass and body to minimize buffeting and noise.

The same thing happened to us in our first road trip in our 2010 GLK350! My wife and I thought it was the craziest thing, but apparently it's more common than we thought. So, I bought a replacement online for 25 bucks and just installed it. It fits on there pretty darn tight, like you say, so I didn't think it needed any weatherstrip sealant goo or anything. I wonder if they put anything like that on at the factory. It doesn't look like there was any on our original seal. What do you guys think?

Thanks!

Mike
