Planetary gears a common problem?
My parents have a 2013 GLK (first model year for the electric steering). The last time I drove it, I heard and felt a rumbling/groaning when the steering wheel is turned full lock. I took in to the dealer, they immediately knew what it was, said it was the planetary gears in the transfer case. From the way he talked, it sounds like it is a fairly common problem. He says that problems are usually due to insufficient 'soaking' in lube at the factory. It was good that I took it in, the warranty expires next month, and he said that it is a $2100 repair. I have a 2015, so I am wondering if mine will eventually develop the problem, or if there is any maintenance I can do to prevent it. My parents have been taking it to the dealer for all of the recommended service.
