2013 GLK 350 engine failure from oil filter?

Has a person with Mercedes that actually knows the two filters and motors diffrences given a correct technical reason that this different filter could harm a 261. Or is everyone still guessing. As yet I've heard of no technical reason the filter could hurt a 261. That's the starting point of this.
What if the fact was this filter could not criticality damage a 261 in a few hours. Start there.

He used a 272 filter on a 276 engine. 261 you keep referencing throughout is what, typo, or something else? At any rate, the MB experts have documented the engine issues as a result of the wrong filter. It's on OP's receipt.
UNLESS you are thinking the MB techs at the dealer are wrong/lying? Distinct possibility - but I also know they love warranty work so, if they could, they'd love to cover repairs so they could get paid. I think it's safe to say that, car maintenance 101 says, you must use a filter that fits your car or there can be oil system damage.
I'm just so curious to see if OP can drive around with no problems now (assuming he starts using correct filter). Neat to see how much "damage" these M276 can withstand.

261 Typo, sorry.
If the Mb tech saw the wrong filter and just said "that's the cause" without actually knowing how it caused damage , then I ask again. What was the exact process of using a filter without the plastic cage, that caused damage. Till then I don't know if it would cause damage, until I'm told exactly how. Someone knows.

Ok , first that I heard of that. His case if he has one is the oil place took out a tomatoe and put in a potato. They didn't do diligence on a filter change . A good lawyer would likely win it

I think there is shared liability here and the case might be hard to prove. You're in essense saying the quickie lube shop should have protected you from yourself by calling out your filter as incorrect. That's a big leap. Likewise, Amazon's defense is that they offer help not a warranty that the parts are exact. In the end, you need to know what you need. I would try a small claims court action so you don't dig a more expensive hole. Dig up a lot of data on implied warranty and hope for the best.
Mann and Hengst make the appropriate fleece filter for your engine. Double check your research and order a few spares.
The oil is critical too. Not just a synthetic. Look at the chart:
http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevoli...nt_action=show
I have a 272 motor but the 276 also uses the 229.5 spec oil. I use Euro Spec Mobil 1 0-40 but there are others that meet the spec too. This is a terrible place to be winging it.
I use AutohausAZ as a parts shop because their parts and details are good. They show 2 filters with that cone as correct depending on your spec. That will need some research too.

Update:
Car is running perfectly fine. My buddy's shop took a look at it and tested for 2 days and they say no problems they can find. The correct oil filter is on the car now and no CEL. Maybe there is damage to the internals but my concern is MAXCARE. I need to find out if the service advisor called maxcare and reported this whole incident because apparently he did an "internal" invoice for my visit at the dealership so that I won't receive a phone call review from the dealer. Apparently, this is the way to getting around bad reviews from customers. I will def be calling MB USA to force them to giving me a review from the dealership because they were TERRIBLE.
I need to find out if MAXCARE extended warranty will cover any engine issues going forward because of this whole wrong oil filter. Will update tomorrow once I speak to a rep from maxcare.

I normally do not defend the dealer but what makes them terrible in this case. They were correct. The dealer keeps a record every time they see a car. You bought the wrong filter and had it installed by incompetent people. You probably caused damage to your engine even though it is running fine now. Only time will tell. Please see the TSB I posted. If there is damage to the engine caused by negligence then your warranty as well as ESW may be voided. I would read your Maxcare policy.

Anyway, enough ranting. Maxcare had no record of me going to the dealership last week and all is well on my end i hope. I will still call MBUSA because that dealership was terrible.
thanks everyone for the very useful info!
