Transfer case grinding

Transfer case grinding
2010 Mercedes Benz GLK350 4matic 110,900 miles/178321 km. Records show a 60,000 mile/96560 km service. Not sure if transmission maintenance service completed. GLK350 has good records and super clean condition. I'm getting a grinding sound from the transfer case (metal on metal sound goes away when let off acceleration). My tech informed me that it is in the planetary gear area and that it is all one component with transmission. Mercedes has no parts or remedy other than to replace transmission and entire transfer case, apparently it is all one sealed unit. I was informed that it will get louder with age/miles but will not fail ? True/False ? Is there a repair remedy without replacing entire transmission ? AND... any chance Mercedes will assist in cost of repair? Any bulletins/recalls since 2010

Unfortunately there is no recall and due to the age of your vehicle, It will be extremely hard for Mercedes to assist with repairs.
The entire transmission needs to be replaced since the transfer case is part of the transmission itself. It is a sealed unit and not meant to be rebuilt. It is however possible to rebuild the transmission, but with that high of mileage, it will be better to find a used transmission and pop it in. Rebuilt trannies don’t last very long and will cost pretty much the same amount as a used transmission
