Individual front reading lights?

Individual front reading lights?
I just got a 2011 GLK350 and still learning it, so this may be a very obvious and dumb question, but the front interior overhead lights work if I hit the main button and both turn on, but the individual lights don't turn on when I push the individual buttons. I had tested this in daylight, so is it possible they are only available in dark environment? I am sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

only the overhead light turns on when you hit the main button. the individual reading lights will only turn on when the individual buttons are pressed. they are meant to be used in the dark as individual each.

Did you do this at night? As I remember, the reading lights are actually small spot beams from near the front of the overhead or even the mirror, not the big ones. But I maybe remembering a different vehicle.
