Engine Hood Support Struts
The two hood struts or supports have failed. I open the hood whenever the car has been out & about to relieve heat build up in the engine compartment which possibly has contributed to their failure. Then again, the set is original & 9+ years old. OEM replacement 204-980-05-64 & 10-64 list for $92.00 MOL each & can be purchased for $64.00 each. Not cheap. An alternative is manufactured by Stabilus for $36.00 each. Mentioned in the product description is that this replacement does not have a protective tube, whatever that is. Has anyone any experience with this company's products on a GLK or any model of MB? TIA!

Working with the OEM numbers, AutohausAZ shows this: https://www.autohausaz.com/catalog/k...hood%20support OEM numbers are 204-980-05-64 & 10-64. The website appears to say the Stabilus is available for both of the OEM numbers. Looks promising esp. if the company is the OEM supplier. Anyone else have any experience? TIA!

Stabilus makes excellent hood and trunk struts (many made in the US), and is based in Germany (Stabilus Group). They make quality parts and I would say purchase with confidence.

@andreigbs, thank you for the input. Can you shed any light on differences regarding construction? I am curious about what is meant by the absence of the protective tube. There does appear to be a second tube or something beyond the gas shock on the OEM.

I think the "protective tube" is basically a sleeve that adds extra bit of protection to the gas strut itself, but is not a mandatory component on replacement shocks. It may even be possible to reuse the protective tube itself, I'm not certain.
The MB parts site quotes both a "strut cylinder" and a "lift cylinder," all roughly in the $65-68 price range, in a Left and Right application. I think some models came with the protective tubes, others didn't, but I think you could use either type of strut.
If it was my car, I wouldn't hesitate buying the Stabilus.

Quick delivery from AutohausAZ + a good price is a nice combination. Removed the struts one at a time, supported the hood with a roughly 41" piece of 2 x 4 in the centre held in place with the help of the Mrs. Both OEM struts are Stabilus with MB p/n. Win, win! Comparing the old & new, the replacements do have what I believe is to be the dust cover on each strut. The covers are a different colour (gray vs. black) but otherwise appear to be same as the OEM. Yes, there is a difference between the left & right struts. Thanks to all who responded to my query.
