Whining/whirring noise
My daughter's 2011 GLK 350 has about 103k miles. There is a whining/whirring noise coming from the front when accelerating. It is not particularly loud but it is noticeable. The dealer claims that the transfer case and transmission need to be replaced at a cost of $9k. There are no codes, no changes to driveability and it seems early for transmission failure.
Any thoughts or similar experiences?

This is very common for the 4-matics of that age. Search and you will find lots of reports of issues.

as everyone said, and from my own research this is in fact a common problem plaguing the early model GLKs, the really early models have reports of them failing as low as 20k miles. I suggest you hit up a local indie dealer you trust, might be able to get that done for about 70% cheaper.
Good luck

Hmmm...all of the failures that I've read about happen early on.
Maybe it's not TC and it's front diff. I would take it to indy for second opinion.
If they drain fluid out of front diff that should be telling if something is wrong there.
Good luck, let us know of the progress/resolution.

Is the sound there ONLY when accelerating? If you sit in your driveway with the transmission in neutral or park and rev the engine, does the whine that corresponds with engine speed? Or is it not there?
When I purchased my GLK a few months ago, it had 61K miles on it. It also had a godawful whine from the front. But that whine varied with engine speed/. Using the old mechanics trick of a section or rubber hose as a stethoscope, I was able to narrow it down to the alternator. Made that a part of my deal when I bought the car, and had the dealer replace the alternator and the serpentine belt. Whine was gone.
