2010 GLK Whirring / Washer Spin-Cycle Sound

2010 GLK Whirring / Washer Spin-Cycle Sound
My wife's 2010 GLK just started having a whirring sound coming from somewhere in the front. It kinda sounds like a washer spin-cycle. It increases and changes pitch slightly with speed, starting around 20mph. It does not change with RPM or gear change. Searching the forum I saw a number of posts about 2010 GLKs having faulty transfer cases. Obviously, that would suck. Its lower mileage (78k) but way out of warranty, and we've been waiting for years for the airbag recall which they finally got parts for.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to approach this? I imagine they will quote even more than the $8k I was seeing people report in 2012. Anything it could be that wouldn't basically kill the car? Thanks for any help.

Just to follow up: it’s the transfer case 
Independant shop estimating about $6k because the tranny is attached.
2010 GLk 78,600 miles... not sure if MB will have mercy on my soul.
