1st problem, just venting

We were out in my wife's 2015 GLK250 today and had our very first problem with the car. Coming out of a store we noticed that a part of the exhaust pipe was hanging down. Had a look and noticed that the bolt holding the clamp joint between the rear part of the exhaust system (including the rear muffler) and the rest of the system had snapped due to corrosion. The end of the pipe was hanging about 3in from the ground but I was able to wire it back in place temporarily to get us home.

Got to thinking, the hanging end of the pipe was facing forward. So if we had hit a pothole or rough railroad tracks the end of the pipe could easily have hit the road and the damage could have been severe. We could easily have been looking at the rear muffler tearing off taking with it a chunk of the rear bumper. Just blind luck that this didn't happen, we're 3 mths out of warranty

OK, we live in the rust belt but gimme a break! Still love the car but for MB to hold a stainless exhaust system together with bolts that rust through in 4 yrs is pretty sad. The best or nothing?

End of rant.

Ask and see if they'll do a goodwill fix since it is so close out of warranty.

Good idea but I fixed it myself with a freebee stainless bolt from my friendly neighborhood auto parts store.

I’m sure it was a mistake because it rusted out as they are dissimilar metals and are never put together

I had the same bolt rust through after only 3 years, fortunately I heard the clamp rattling and replaced the bolt before the pipes separated.

Only 3yrs, must be an Ontario thing. Glad you avoided a mess. There's another identical clamp between the cat and the Y pipe and I briefly thought about replacing the bolt but decided against it, There are separate hangers for both pipes so it's pretty safe and I didn't want to create a problem if (when?) the bolt snaps while I'm trying to loosen it. Let sleeping clamps lie.
